Bondi Beach, Australia
What is so very cool about visiting Sydney, Australia, is the proximity of the beaches to Sydney's inner city. Before heading to world famous Bondi Beach, you may want to get your toes wet at Manly Beach. It is just a short 7 mile scenic ferry ride on the Sydney Harbor to the northern, quintessentially Australlian beach of Manly, and the Corso pedestrian walkway that leads to the spectacular ocean beaches.
Be Inspired tip- Arrive in time for lunch and dine at Le Kiosk right on the beach, voted by the NY Times as one of the most romantic restaurants in Australia. Enjoy a glass of wine from its specially curated list, and pass the afternoon away people watching, enjoying the views, and relaxing before the ferry ride back to Sydney's Circular Quay. There is a famous quote about Manley which says it all-Manly Beach is "seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care," quoted from the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company, which operated from the late 19th to the 20th centuries.
It is easy to take a cab or a 20 minute bus ride from Sydney to Bondi Beach. Bondi is an aboriginal word meaning "water breaking over rocks," and boy does it. The waves in this part of Australia can be immense and awe-inspiring. Maybe you will catch the perfect wave. There are several surf schools to help you in your quest. A nice day trip is to plan breakfast at a cafe at Bronte Beach, and then take a leisurely and scenic walk to Bondi Beach where you can spend the day. There are many restaurants, bars, ice cream shops and there is a changing pavilion.
Off the Beaten Path suggestion-Stop by at end of Bondi Beach at the Bondi Iceberg Club, founded in 1929 by lifeguards staying fit over the off season. There is an outdoor saltwater pool at the edge of the sand that is refilled with seawater from the crashing waves at regular intervals. Swim a few laps, and boom, as a new wave of water crashes into the pool. Don't worry, this time of year in Australia the water is warm, you should try it in the winter for the best Bondi Beach experience. You can even spot whales from the pool deck.
